Lighting Up Croydon: A Tribute to the NHS & Key Workers – Clap For Carers / NHS – IKEA Towers

Thursday, 23rd April 2020 – A Night to Remember

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, communities across the UK found ways to show their gratitude to the incredible NHS staff and key workers who were keeping the country going. For us—Tom Rose, Kieran Edmonds, and Nick Jemicz—we wanted to contribute in the way we knew best: through the power of light.

With personal connections to the NHS and key workers—whether through our partners working on the frontline or needing NHS care ourselves—this cause was close to our hearts. We wanted to create something bold, impactful, and inspiring to show our appreciation.

Illuminating the IKEA Towers

Our vision? Lighting up the iconic IKEA Towers in Croydon, standing over 100 meters tall, to send a message of solidarity and gratitude that could be seen for miles. It was a challenge—not only because of the scale but also due to the strict social distancing measures in place at the time. However, through careful planning and teamwork, we made it happen.

As the lights illuminated the night sky, we hoped it lifted the spirits of those who saw it—whether NHS workers on their way home, key workers keeping essential services running, or Croydon residents looking for a sign of hope during uncertain times.

A Moment of Unity

This project wasn’t about us—it was about the tireless dedication of those on the frontline. It was a reminder that even in the darkest times, small gestures can bring people together.

To everyone who saw our tribute and to every key worker and NHS hero: thank you.
